Our eco-friendly rails achieve 70% reduction of CO2 emissions

Saarstahl Ascoval & Saarstahl Rail

ex. EAF – Electric Arc Furnace

0.643kg CO2eq./kg rail

ø Steel industry

ex. BF-BOF – Blast Furnace / Blast Oxygen Furnace

2.58 kg CO2eq./kg rail

By using rails from Saarstahl RAIL, CO2 savings of around 70% are possible.

CO2 reduced Rails demonstrate 70% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional production.

Thanks to steel production via electric steel plant, Saarstahl Group is the only European manufacturer of rail material on a large scale to offer a significant reduction in CO2 emissions across the three categories of emission analysis:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from the company related to the production of the product (steel plant and rolling mill emissions).
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions related to the energy consumption required for the production (emissions from the electricity supplier).
  • Scope 3: Other indirect emissions: supply chain (ore extraction), transport of raw materials, product use, staff transport, services, etc.

The electric arc furnace (EAF) production technology limits CO2 emissions to 0.643 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of rail, whereas production via the blast furnace route emits approximately 2.58 kg CO2 equivalent per kg of rail produced.
